But showing the wonderous world of her research to her small child was impossible... Until now. She has been working on a wonderful little book called "The hidden world of diatoms", which will be part of a series of books for children in English, looking into all kinds of microorganisms. The engaging book is illustrated with beautiful pictures produced by the talented Helena Kreissel, in which the beauty of diatoms is underlined with beautiful colours. But, Emanuela wanted to use micro-photographs to show the children how these extraordinary organisms look under the microscope. To do this, she contacted Young ISDR to try and get as many images as possible, to chose some for the book, others for the webpage ( https://thehiddenworld.co.uk/young-diatomists/ ), where the educational effort will continue after the book is publishe...

Dear fellow young diatomists, Our parent organization, the International Society of Diatom Research (ISDR) is looking for a new logo. And the decision has been to start a contest. Please feel free to participate if you are a creative young diatomist. What you need:  an idea to represent what the ISDR means to you in a picture/infography that is informative to the non-knowing. Be creative! After those Speedtalks at the IDS, we know you are! we recommend that you WATERMARK YOUR DESIGN, so that people know whose it is and so it will not be used by other people unknowingly.  Send your design to our email (youngdiatomists@gmail.com) in a vector style graphic . It will be used in publications, media and so on. DEADLINE is on October 31st 2018 . The images will be published in THIS BLOG using a google form so that people can vote for the best design.   The prize is a free registration to the next IDS meeting in Yamagata 2020!

News on the IDS front: we are launching the Speedtalk inscription for the International Diatom Symposium in Berlin . What are speedtalks? Either talk, present, rhyme, dance, relate, describe, paint, do a micro-stand up... about a topic concerning diatoms in under 3 minutes. It is a fun way to explain your research (or other stuff about diatoms that you are anxious to share), and you can win f u n prizes! Any of you that were at Quebec know, how fun these presentations can be. If we have whetted your appetite and you think you would want to do this fun activity in the International Diatom Symposium, please, subscribe here .  https://goo.gl/forms/3SoQwx0octDpWOOj1 If you are interested, but want more information, please write to youngdiatomists@gmail.com.
