Postdoctoral position (microalgae cryopreservatio) on the Botany Department at Federal University of São Carlos, SP, Brazil

The Laboratory of Phycology the laboratory of Algal Biotechnology of the Federal University of
São Carlos with the support of the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) on a Thematic Project
is selecting one researcher for a post-doctorate fellowship. The position is available for
Brazilian and foreign qualified researchers.

The selected researcher will develop the subproject “Influence of the physiological state on the
freezing of freshwater microalgae: obtaining the best viability rates and functional stability
of the samples after freezing”, within the thematic project “Bioprospection, characterization
and optimization of Brazilian microalgae to CO2 biofixation and production of biomolecules with
commercial importance”.

Requirements:
- The applicant must have PhD in Biological Sciences, Botany, Ecology or related areas, with
verified experience (master or PhD thesis) in phycology. The degree must have been acquired
within the last 7 years of the application deadline.
- The candidate researcher must have experience with cryopreservation protocols of green coccoid
freshwater microalgae (Chlorophyta: Selenastraceae, Scenedesmaceae; Oocystaceae, Chlorellaceae
and others Trebouxiophyceae) verified by publications, such as two steps variable freezing rate,
vitrification and dehydration, verified by publications. Furthermore, must have abilities to
develop new cryopreservation protocols for freshwater green microalgae.
- Researcher must also have experience in physiology of freshwater green microalgae, and
experience in obtaining (isolating) and maintaining axenic microalgal cultures.
- It is important experience with techniques as PhytoPam, flow multiparametric cytometry, and
AFLP (amplified fragment length polymorphism), to quantify algal growth, and genetic and
functional variability in microalgae.

The postdoctoral researcher will be granted a fellowship by FAPESP (R$ 7,373.10 per month, 24
months), and with Research Contingency Funds - an amount of 15% of the annual value of the
fellowship to unforeseen expenses directly related to the research activities of the subproject.
More details about the postdoctoral fellowship granted by FAPESP can be found in the FAPESP-
Opportunities site: http://www.fapesp.br/en/postdoc.
The beginning of the activities is planned for June 1st, 2019.
The application can be submitted exclusively by email, with the required documentation attached
in PDF format. The documentation must be send to the email of the Professor Ana Teresa Lombardi
(lombardi@ufscar.br) before April, 20th 2019.
The documents required are: 1) letter of interest; 2) current Curriculum Vitae (no more than 3
pages), which must include publications and manuscripts accepted for publication, confirming the
required abilities/knowledge; 3) a copy of the doctor degree, and 4) a copy of the thesis
summary.

Other postdoctoral positions funded by FAPESP, in various areas of knowledge can be found in the
