DIATOM/ ALGAL CONFERENCES








    Meeting of the NVKD (Dutch-Flemish Diatom Association)
    When: From October 3th until October 5th 2019
    Where: At Plantentuin Meise (Botanical Garden Meise, Belgium)
    Description of Meeting: A diatom meeting with diverse lecture topics. Keynote speaker is probably Paul Hamilton. During the meeting there will be an exhibition about diatom art in the botanical garden; which will be visited during the meeting. Additionally, there will be a workshop about the Fragilaria capucina complex.
    The meeting and workshop are open to members of the NVKD, but membership fees are low. More information on possibilities for students to join the meeting will come available on the website soon.

    IbiS (Isotopes in Biogenic Silica)

    Description of Meeting: "Silicon, Silica and their Isotopes: Biology, Biogeochemistry and Biotechnology" aimed to share and discuss recent advances and discoveries in:
    1.      Biological and molecular processes involved in the production of biogenic silica.
    2.      Ecological and biogeochemical mechanisms behind silica fluxes and stocks in continental and marine ecosystems, including paleo-ecosystems.
    3.      Stable and radioactive isotopes for tracing and quantifying production, accumulation and recycling pathways of silicon and silica in both modern and ancestral environments of continental and marine systems.

    North American Diatom Symposium 2019

    Where: University of Georgia's 4-H Center in Eatonton, Georgia (United States)
    Description of Meeting: International symposium participants will present their work in diatom research including biodiversity, evolution, ecology, systematics, biological assessment, paleolimnology, and nanotechnology. In addition to the scientific program, the meeting will include traditional NADS activities (the Scum Run and auction).

    Geological setting in Finland The last glaciation, approximately 10 000 years ago, eroded and deposited material leaving behind a landscape full of glacial landforms in northern Europe. These landforms include thick layers of basal tills, glaciofluvial eskers, and moraines, to name a few. The retreating glacier also left behind a multitude of lakes in Finland. These lakes are often shallow and elongated in the direction of the ice flow. A majority of the lakes are located in central-eastern Finland, called the Finnish Lake District, where a relatively coarse-grained basal till covers most of the land surface. These tills deposited under actively flowing ice lobes that flushed away the finer materials. However, in the intersection of two actively flowing ice lobes, a passive interlobate area formed.     Diatom(s) of the Month - November 2017: the recently-digitized Diatom New Taxon File (DNTF) at the Academy of Natural Sciences

The Diatom New Taxon File, or “DNTF”, is a digitized card catalog of all published diatom names, along with original descriptions, images, and literature citations of taxa published since 1933. It serves as a resource for diatom scientists, taxonomists, systematists, students, and enthusiasts! Figure 1 . DNTF Homepage (from 25 September 2017). The original card catalog lives in the Diatom Herbarium at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia (ANSP), Pennsylvania, USA. Although we no longer add physical cards to the DNTF, Herbarium staff manage and update digital “cards” through our website: http://symbiont.ansp.org/dntf/  (Fig. 1) . Why is the DNTF important?
