Emanuela Samaritani, PhD, is a scientist and mother. But showing the wonderous world of her research to her small child was impossible... Until now. She has been working on a wonderful little book called "The hidden world of diatoms", which will be part of a series of books for children in English, looking into all kinds of microorganisms.

The engaging book is illustrated with beautiful pictures produced by the talented Helena Kreissel, in which the beauty of diatoms is underlined with beautiful colours. But, Emanuela wanted to use micro-photographs to show the children how these extraordinary organisms look under the microscope. To do this, she contacted Young ISDR to try and get as many images as possible, to chose some for the book, others for the webpage (https://thehiddenworld.co.uk/young-diatomists/), where the educational effort will continue after the book is published.

But, to be published, the book needed to be funded. To do this, Emanuela chose a kickstarter as a method of subsidizing the publication costs. In her words:
"The book is going to be self-published, which means that all costs of the process are on me, the author. The way crowdfunding on kickstarter works, is that you can help get the project done by pre-ordering the book or making a donation at the following link. If the goal is not reached by the end date of the campaign, the project will not be able to go through and no money at all will be taken from your card. However, if pledges do reach the set amount, then the money will be charged on your card and you will receive your book fresh from printing by February 2019.
You can learn more about the crowdfunding campaign and pre-order your book at

Thanks to all the people that have participated, the kickstarter has been a success, but you can still pre-order this magnificent book. If you think that the wonderous diatoms should be divulged to the public at such an early age as possible and you like this initiative, please participate or spread the word!
