PhD in applied Diatomology: diatom cultures

Due to unexpected development I had to recruit quite urgently a new PhD student for four-year period to be involved in a project oriented on use of diatom cultures in applied sciences. The project is unusually attractive in terms of contract conditions.

Geological setting in Finland The last glaciation, approximately 10 000 years ago, eroded and deposited material leaving behind a landscape full of glacial landforms in northern Europe. These landforms include thick layers of basal tills, glaciofluvial eskers, and moraines, to name a few. The retreating glacier also left behind a multitude of lakes in Finland. These lakes are often shallow and elongated in the direction of the ice flow. The Diatom New Taxon File, or “DNTF”, is a digitized card catalog of all published diatom names, along with original descriptions, images, and literature citations of taxa published since 1933. It serves as a resource for diatom scientists, taxonomists, systematists, students, and enthusiasts! Figure 1 . DNTF Homepage (from 25 September 2017). The original card catalog lives in the Diatom Herbarium at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia (ANSP), Pennsylvania, USA.
