2019 Newsletter

Dear fellow early career researchers,

Another year has nearly gone by. Time to look back to all the things Young ISDR has achieved this year.

At the beginning of the year, we had our logo contest, with 14 beautiful entries and two factual winners, Anh Tu (Lina) Van and Kim Krahn. Finally, the beautiful logo of Lina was selected and is now the official logo of our society

Since mid-year Koeltz books offered two great new features for ECR ISDR members:
  • 30% discount on Koeltz books
  • Possibility to review and keep a book of your interest

We have participated in several conferences to advertise the societies activities and the Young ISDR network with poster presentations in:
  • Central European Diatom Meeting in Luxembourg
  • INQUA meeting in Dublin
  • Cryptogamic Botany Symposium in Lisbon

Our blog has also been evolving and we have had:

For the new year we have the following planned:
  1. Our blog is moving! Within the next year our Young ISDR blog (also including the Diatom of the Month Series)  will be integrated into the new ISDR webpage.  We are very excited about this and hope that you like it as much as we do! Once the blog is moving officially, we will of course announce this and keep you informed, so that you will not miss out any information. /
  2. IDS in Yamagata: the next International Diatom Symposium will be held in Yamagata (Japan) in August 23rd-28th 2020. We will have activities for ECRs (pre-symposium workshops, our meeting, speed talks…) and we will be looking for the next ECR chair!
  3. Reach out. Our Young ISDR core team is working on all of these activities. It is a fun atmosphere and, although it is in addition to our workload, we have a lot of fun doing it. Would you be interested in joining us? Are you a bachelor/master/pre-doc/postdoc/technician? Why not join and volunteer? The more we are, the more fun we have (and can share the workload) :)

I also wanted to take this space to thank Dr. Hannah Hartung, Dr. Xavier Benito and Dr. Chetan Gaonkar for taking time of their busy schedules to help me continue building this networking opportunity for international ECR diatomists!

We wish you a merry christmas and a happy new year!

Best wishes to you all,

Andrea and the Young ISDR Core Team
